At approximately 9:20 p.m. on July 20, U.S. Border Patrol agents assigned to the Boulevard Station in San Diego County received a call from a local resident of Jacumba, Calif.

The woman caller stated her 14-year-old granddaughter, a U.S. citizen, had become very ill while visiting Jacume, Mexico.

“The girl had a high fever and lost sensation in her legs before experiencing seizures and drifting in and out of consciousness,” according to the statement.

The family in Mexico had no immediate local emergency services, so the grandmother requested Border Patrol grant permission to allow transportation of the child into the United States right away, according to the statement.

Working with Cal Fire, U.S. Border Patrol arranged transfer of the girl into the United States over the international border fence, where she was subsequently transported to Sharp Grossmont Hospital in La Mesa.

The boy -- a U.S. citizen -- was struck by a vehicle while visiting family in Mexico.

“The U.S. Border Patrol is committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of those in distress in the border region. Since October 1, 2011, Border Patrol agents have rescued 17 people in the San Diego Sector,” today’s statement read.
