An investigation was continuing Thursday into the accidental shooting death of a 5-year-old boy at a residence in a rural community near Perris, where several hundred marijuana plants were found growing in the back yard, sheriff's officials said.
The shooting was reported around 5:20 p.m. Tuesday in the 31000 block of Wolfskill Avenue in Nuevo. The child was found dead inside the residence, and his death was being investigated as accidental, Riverside County sheriff's Deputy Albert Martinez said.
Marijuana plants were found at the rear of the property, but marijuana had nothing to do with the shooting, he said. About 200 plants were confiscated, he said.
NBC4 reported that the boy found the gun and accidentally shot himself with the weapon. The child's grandfather was the only adult home at the time, according to Channel 4.
Investigators were seen Wednesday carting off computers and other evidence, as well as the marijuana found in the yard.
