Darrell Issa On Holder Contempt: 'This Was Not The Outcome I Had Sought'

Rep. Darrell Issa, who represents Lake Elsinore, was the primary figure behind Thursday's historic vote that put Attorney General Eric Holder in contempt of Congress.

was spotlighted again Thursday when the Republican-led House voted along party lines to hold Attorney General Eric Holder in contempt of Congress.

It is the first time in history an attorney general has been held in contempt.

National Public Radio reported that droves of Democratic lawmakers protested today’s vote by walking out of House chambers.

The vote follows a June 20 decision by the GOP-controlled House Oversight and Government Reform Committee -- which is chaired by Issa, who represents Lake Elsinore. On that day, the committee voted to recommend holding the attorney general in contempt of the committee after the Obama administration, citing executive privilege for the first time, refused to turn over certain documents pertaining to

To decide what comes next, the criminal contempt charge is being referred to the U.S. Attorney in the District of Columbia – Holder’s own Justice Department.

In a separate measure today, the House also voted to give Issa's committee the authorization to sue the Department of Justice in federal court in an effort to enforce their subpoena seeking the documents.

As NPR reported today, Attorney General Eric Holder called the House vote "unfortunate" and "politically motivated."

"Today's vote is the regrettable culmination of what has become a misguided and politically motivated investigation during an election year," Holder said in a televised statement. "By advancing this over the past year and a half, Congressman Issa and others have focused on politics over public safety."

“Holder said that when the flawed Fast and Furious tactics came to light, he took action, ordering the tactics stopped and ordering an investigation. He said Issa and Republicans in Congress have rebuffed his attempts to bring this to a resolution without a contempt vote,” NPR reported.

Issa issued a statement today that read in part, “This was not the outcome I had sought and it could have been avoided had Attorney General Holder actually produced the subpoenaed documents he said he could provide."

I agree! It's time to be accountable!

Accountable? Issa's entire premise may be untrue. Did you read the article by Katherine Eban of Fortune Magazine? “Quite simply, there’s a fundamental misconception at the heart of the Fast and Furious scandal. Nobody disputes that suspected straw purchasers under surveillance by the ATF repeatedly bought guns that eventually fell into criminal hands. Issa and others charge that the ATF intentionally allowed guns to walk as an operational tactic. But five law-enforcement agents directly involved in Fast and Furious tell Fortune that the ATF had no such tactic. They insist they never purposefully allowed guns to be illegally trafficked. Just the opposite: They say they seized weapons whenever they could but were hamstrung by prosecutors and weak laws, which stymied them at every turn.” If they were so concerned about guns getting into the wrong hands they would have sought gun regulation but instead they support the NRA no matter what they call for. By the way: So much for the Republican mantra that they are concentrating on the economy and jobs.

Of course Law enforcement officers who's careers are on the line in an operation that went bad would never shade the Truth to save their career. What's the Democratic Mantra when they are looking at Gun Control measures, "If you have nothing to hide, why not submit to "more" Gun regulations as a way of Public Safety." OK my Democratic friends, "If you have nothing to hide, release the Documents to Congress so the situation can be thoroughly investigated that involved the Death of Law Enforcement officers." The Officers family's deserve that.

I read about Issa on Wikipedia. He ain't perfect, but glad as hell he's on board with us conservatives. I hope Eric Holder goes to jail. I know he won't, Obama will see to that, but one can always hope.

Issa's statement that 'This Was Not the Outcome I Had Sought' is totally insincere. His whole point was and is to try and embarrass the Obama administration and eliminate Attorney General Holder's chances for other career opportunities. His contemptible participation in this witch hunt is part and parcel of the Republicans’ stated goal to ensure that Barack Obama is denied a second term as President. In response to recent, direct questions on national TV, Issa has admitted that these suspicions and inflammatory accusations are completely wihtout merit and that he and his committee have absolutely no evidence of any wrong doing. In this matter Issa is acting like Richard Nixon and Sen. Joseph McCarthy did in their shameful prosecutions which ruined loyal American citizens' careers and lives when they conducted hearings under the Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations of the Government Operations Committee of the U.S. Senate. "In 1947, the committee held nine days of hearings into alleged communist propaganda and influence...more than 300 artists—including directors, radio commentators, actors and particularly screenwriters—were boycotted... Only about ten percent succeeded in rebuilding careers within the entertainment industry." McCarthy and Nixon's investigations resulted in the infamous Hollywood "Black List" and gave both of these politically ambitious men the notoriety and attention they were seeking – to the shame and detriment of our nation.

Yesterday Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) filed a complaint against Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA) for violating the federal wiretapping law in his Fast and Furious witch hunt. Under the law, applications for wiretap warrants are sealed and can’t be disclosed without a court’s permission. Violating the law can land you in contempt. Rep. Issa wanted to disclose the information, but not face prosecution for doing it. So, instead of giving the documents to the media, he inserted excerpts into the Congressional Record and then told reporters where to look. This was an obvious attempt to shield his illegal conduct behind the Constitution’s Speech or Debate Clause. That’s why CREW filed a complaint with the Office of Congressional Ethics. Even if Rep. Issa is never prosecuted for his outrageous conduct, he is subject to discipline by the House. You can read CREW letters to the Office of Congressional Ethics and the Department of Justice at http://www.citizensforethics.org/.

Definition of Conservative: Afraid of progress, unforgiving to the point of mean-spirited, pro-wealthy, anti-consumer, anti-middle class, anti-environment, lacks faith in humanity, embraces a culture of corruption, anti-government. I'm glad I don't label myself a conservative.
