A lengthy bill that passed the U.S. Senate in June features plans for comprehensive immigration reform, and President Barack Obama has made clear he wants reform before his time in office ends.
The bill, SB 744, sponsored by Sen. Charles Schumer (D-NY), is a big package. The proposal lays out provisions that include, among others, a pathway to citizenship, tighter border security, allowing many undocumented immigrants to obtain provisional status to stay in the United States, the establishment of an agricultural worker program, and renaming the Office of Citizenship of Department of Homeland Security as the Office of Citizenship and New Americans.
In an effort to get House Republicans moving on immigration reform, the president said Thursday he might consider GOP proposals to overhaul separate parts of the immigration system, instead of pushing for the giant Senate bill now on the table.
