Jail To Get Seven New Washing Machines At A Cost Of $293,000

The sheriff intends to tap a fund reserved for inmate booking fees to pay for the seven Milnor industrial washers.

Riverside County Sheriff Stan Sniff's request to spend $293,000 on new commercial washing machines to clean inmate laundry was approved today by the Board of Supervisors.

The sheriff intends to tap a fund reserved for inmate booking fees to pay for the seven Milnor industrial washers, which will replace units long in operation at the Larry D. Smith Correctional Facility in Banning.

A total of nine washers handle an average 1.5 million pounds of laundry annually, cleaning bedding and uniforms from the Smith facility, the Indio Jail, the Southwest Detention Center in Murrieta and the Robert Presley Detention Center in Riverside.

, Chairman Bob Buster drew attention to the planned washing machine purchases, grilling the sheriff as to why his department was so deep in the hole when there were sub funds like the one for booking fees available from which to withdraw revenue.

"There's a lot of money squirreled away here,'' Buster said, noting the fund had a balance of $6 million.

The Sheriff's Department is anticipating a $35 million to $81 million shortfall in the 2011-12 fiscal year.

Sniff was given limited opportunity to respond to Buster's question, telling the supervisor at one point that he was trying to mix "apples and oranges.'' --City News Service

I was just doing the math.. $293,000 divided by the 7 machines they want to get... .

Not only is it totally ludicrous to pay $41,oo for a machine, it is even worse to think that our BOARD OF SUPERVISORS APPROVED THAT......WHO ELECTED THESE IDIOTS ANYWAY....PERHAPS WE SHOULD CHARGE THEM EACH PERSONALLY, THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN $56,000 TOTAL AND $293,000 THEY APPROVED..THAT WOULD GIVE US $237,OOO IN FUNDS TO PRINT PETITIONS TO IMPEACH THEM .

Why isn't that money used to produce better or more jobs for us that do not have jobs, and or education for people who can't get jobs due to they can't speak spanish or just better training in general? Do these inmates really need such expensive washers? This is ridiculous, a clear waste of our money and who on earth would approve such a incredibly large expense? Tifeni you are so right, why did our officials even approve this expense? Remind me not to vote for them come election time.

Boy, do they need a women in the purchasing department. I think it might be cheaper to wash their clothes before they become inmates and keep them out of jail! That sounds more like the cleaners bill for all the suits on wall street...maybe Buster and the sheriff could get the money there!
