Assemblywoman Melissa A. Melendez (R-Lake Elsinore) Friday announced her selection by Assembly Speaker John A. Pérez as the Vice-Chair of the Assembly Public Safety Committee for the 2012-2014 Legislative Session.

“As vice chair of the Assembly Public Safety Committee, I will draw on my experience as a local elected leader and years in the military to offer real world solutions to some of the problems facing our State,” said Assemblywoman Melendez in a released statement. “Nothing is more important to those serving in government than keeping our residents safe.”

The Public Safety Committee generally hears issues related to new and enhanced crimes, peace officers, and the corrections system, the assemblywoman’s office noted.

“As a Navy veteran who served our nation with distinction, Melissa Melendez is an excellent choice to serve as Vice Chair of the Public Safety committee. She understands that public safety is one of government’s highest priorities and that Sacramento must do more to protect Californians. Melissa will fight for effective tough-on-crime policies that keep dangerous criminals behind bars while looking for ways to keep costs down,” said Assembly Republican Leader Connie Conway, of Tulare.

Melendez also announced Friday her selection to serve as a member of the Budget Committee, Budget Sub 5 (Public Safety) Committee, Jobs, Economic Development, and the Economy Committee, Local Government Committee and the Veterans Affairs Committee.
