Lake Elsinore Seniors May Lose Housing

A state-run program, known as RHCP, that helps seniors pay rent may run out of funding leaving seniors struggling to stay in their homes.

Dozens of Lake Elsinore residents are facing an uncertain future after learning that a state run program that subsidizes the cost of rent for some elderly runs out.

ABC 7 News reported the story and spoke to residents at Parkside Apartment in Lake Elsinore.

According to background provided by the news station, the RHCP (or Rental Housing Construction Program) started in the mid-1980s as an annuity to help seniors with rental assistance.

“The funds were going to run out at some point anyway, but because of the economic recession, it's run out of money earlier than was projected,” ABC wrote.

Some residents, many who live on Social Security, fear they may be forced to leave. One resident told ABC they are uncertain where they would go.

"It's distressing, and I'm not even handicapped, and there's several here that are, so it's a sad thing that the state doesn't seem to care what happens to all of us older citizens," Lake Elsinore resident Lynn French told the station.
