Obama's Gun Control Proposal: Are You One Of The 70 Percent?

More Americans, including NRA members, favor stricter gun control measures, the president said Wednesday as he unveiled plans designed to decrease gun violence.

Thirty-three days after 20 first-graders and six staff members were gunned down at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut, President Barack Obama signed 23 executive orders calling for stricter gun control, and he pressured Congress to pass measures to curb gun violence.

Flanked by Vice President Joe Biden and gun violence victims, the president told the nation as he spoke Wednesday in front of an audience gathered at the White House that keeping America’s children safe should be the nation’s first priority.

“We can’t put this off any longer,” he said of today’s actions designed to limit future mass shootings and gun violence. (Click here to read the full list of proposals.)

The president conceded that no set of laws will prevent every tragedy, but said, “if there’s even one thing we can do … we have an obligation to try it.”

The president called on Congress to immediately pass legislation that would require universal background checks on anyone trying to buy a gun, saying that today nearly 40 percent of gun purchases are conducted without checks.

The president said 70 percent of National Rifle Association members want stricter background checks, and he called on the leadership of that organization to listen to its constituents. In his speech, the president criticized gun lobbyists for their allegiance to weapons’ manufacturers and not America’s children, saying the special interests are guilty of fear mongering.

According to an Associated Press-GfK poll that reached 1,004 adults by telephone Jan. 10-14, nearly six in 10 Americans said they wanted stricter gun laws in the aftermath of last month's deadly school shooting, with majorities favoring a nationwide ban on military-style, rapid-fire weapons and limits on gun violence depicted in video games, movies and TV shows.

In his speech Wednesday, the president also called on Congress to pass legislation that would ban military-style assault weapons and place a 10-round limit on magazines. In an effort to rally Republicans, Obama said former President Ronald Reagan urged a military-style assault weapons ban in this country.

Such firearms are “weapons designed for the theater of war,” Obama said Wednesday.

Tougher punishment for those convicted of illegal gun sales was also called for by the president, as was putting more cops on the streets.

The president also said he is directing more money to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for research on the causes of gun violence.

The president has taken heat from some -- including the NRA -- who say stricter gun control measures threaten to strip away rights guaranteed under the 2nd Amendment.

“Let me be perfectly clear,” the president said, explaining that he respects the 2nd Amendment as it pertains to hunting, sport, protection and collection, but guns should be kept out of the hands of dangerous people.

“We have a responsibility,” he said.

The president's orders today were based on recommendations made by a Biden-led task force.

The vice president acknowledged Wednesday that getting legislation through Congress will be a tough road ahead, but said the Sandy Hook shooting has changed the political landscape.

“We have a moral obligation to do everything in our power to prevent this from happening again,” Biden said.

Today is a day that will live in infammy. It's a sad and embarassing day to say I'm American. We are on the road to to a socialist utopia where everyone will be banned from more guns control-banning weapons, trickle down taxation on the wealthy send investment overseas, more resttritive manufacturing regulations forcing natural gas and oil plays off federal lands, unsustainable givernment salaries and yes, a President who hides behind the children with his communist manifesto. And to who disagree with this? We are all RACIST.

"From 1985-94, there were 173 mass shootings and 766 victims. From 1995-04 (starting with 1995 because it was the first full year the law was in effect), there were 182 mass shootings and 830 victims. Clearly the assault weapons ban, which listed banned arms more on their scary appearance than any deadly potential, had no effect. "You had that for 10 years when Dianne Feinstein passed that ban in '94. It was on the books. Columbine occurred right in the middle of it (April 20, 1999). It didn't make any difference," NRA chief Wayne LaPierre argued in a recent appearance on NBC's "Meet The Press," where host David Gregory may have violated the law himself by possessing and waving before the cameras a high-capacity ammunition clip. What has had an effect on crime, and even mass shootings, is the rise in the number of concealed carry states from only a handful 25 years ago to some 41 now. Major crimes, except in gun-controlled major cities, have shown a continuing decline that has paralleled the rise in the number of right-to-carry states. Maybe Mayor Emanuel, instead of calling for a new assault weapons ban, should call on Illinois to become a concealed carry state." So why all the screaming for gun control, Jeff? IT DOESN'T WORK!!!

Hello, 1st off, learn some manners/respect before you address me. 2nd, show me where I indicated any type of a "ban" of any gun in my post? I believe I referred to gun law changes and reform. Apparently reading comprehension is not your strong point. Lastly, I am not a puppet that listens to anyone's propaganda, ......24 years in the Army taught me that....I earned the right to ignore crap like that….. Oh, and did I mention, when will you get it......I could care less about your agenda or your opinion....With all this spare time (some 200+ post on this topic) perhaps you should go show your Commander In Chief how much you believe in his cause, go join the military and defend his policies........Of course, I do shudder at the thought of someone of your viewpoint defending this country, however, we do need some bullet catchers in the middle east still, so go for it...perhaps the Marines. I am curious as to where you saw "what a thug can do" when you mention "we"? Not very many people have seen something like that in person and lived to write on the internet about......I personally have never seen a thug in the US with a assault rifle do anything.....please do not include me in that we.......thanks and have a groovy day......

Before the assault weapons ban a million hi cap mags had been sold. After the ban was lifted people began snapping them up left and right outside California. Since Obama's gun control talk, I can't find one of the 22 website's of shooting supplies that have any in stock and when they do get some in, they're sold within hours. There's about 300 million people in America and 300 million guns, with enough Hi cap mags out there to equip. every man, woman and child with at least 6 hi cap mags apiece. Even if they're banned, they will be available. THe black market price will jump as it did after the 1994 ban. Good citizen's won't touch them, criminals will. Gun Control won't work like it didn't before and it doesn't now in California where Hi cap mags have been illegal since 1994. Nobody is going to be able to stop it. Sorry anti gun guys it's like erasing nuclear missiles. It ain't gonna happen. Peace between Isreal and Palestine , never happen. Did Obama ever get out of the car and walk with his fellow American's like last time?
JohnJ January 21, 2013 at 06:49 PM
Obama gives a good speech though.
JohnJ January 21, 2013 at 06:53 PM
For those who don't know; Records of long rifle sales are not kept on file, not even in California. So it is unknown who owns what. California does keep a record of the owners of handguns though.

JohnJ, you got that right---most ammo has become "scarce", and gone up in prcice a crapload taboot, and will increase in price even more. I was looking at 30 cal. "Black Tips" (M2 Ball A.P.'s) last night at a coupla places. The Greek stuff is still relatively low priced, IF you can find it, but the good U.S. non-corrosive is around TWO BUCKS A POP now. I imagine in CA, where you can't buy it, or ship it in, but can shoot it in long guns, it exceeds that $2 a round by a pretty good chunk o' change, huh? If this keeps up, ammunition may become a Black Marketeer's dream come true.
Vince January 21, 2013 at 07:56 PM
JohnJ... "Stingers"? Lord have mercy, I do loves me some Stingers!! In Mag., or LR, they are great rounds...I have a thing about "rolling" 'Yote's with 'em, and at some pretty impressive ranges too. These idiot "Do-Gooder's" and their laws crack me up...here's some info on the .30 M2 Ball A.P.'s, and mind you, pistol ammo in an A.P. is known as a "Cop Killer" here in CA, and are BANNED---yet this super powerful round that penetrates armor plate is still legal to shoot here in CA.---and they hit with a lot more energy then a pistol round does....duh. .30 Cal. M2 Ball A.P. : On the nomenclature, in the 1930's the army went from using the year as a model name to using M1, M2, M3, etc. So every major item thereafter was given an M number. The rifle was the M1; the carbine the M1 or M2 or M3; ball ammuntion was M1, M2, etc.. So the correct name would be Cartridge, Caliber .30., Ball, M2 or Cartridge, Calliber .30, Armor Piercing, M2. Two different cartridges, but both the second version adopted after the nomenclature change. Cont.

Cont.: Got a phone call...where was I? Oh yeah: It is interesting how AP bullets penetrate. When a bullet strikes a solid object that stops it, its remaining energy is instantly transformed into heat. In the case of an AP bullet striking steel, that heat melts the steel in a small area. If the plate is thin enough, it will be melted or at least softened all the way through. This allows the carbide core, which won't melt, to penetrate. If the plate is too thick, the core will either bounce off or remain stuck when the molten steel "freezes". It was common to see AP bullet cores sticking out of the steel of tank armor; the cores did not penetrate because the armor was too thick for the heat to melt it through, and the cores were trapped when the steel solidified.

Interesting tidbit about Sheriff's duly elected to uphold the law in any given county: They have the sole authority to tell The Fed's to leave their jurisdiction, and DO NOT have to implement any Federal Gun Laws that they deem unconstitutional, unnecessary, or just plain old NOT TOO KOSHER....and please, do look it up: http://cspoa.org/sheriffs-gun-rights/

This tells the story as to why Mr. Obama's Gun Control proposal's are so impotent and weak---smoke and mirror's is what they amount to, and a transparent attempt to "save face" mostly: http://www.thenewamerican.com/usnews/constitution/item/14171-obama-executive-orders-on-guns-would-spark-mass-resistance And here is a little bit about The Sheriff's who are the last word when dealing with Federal Over Reach at "ground zero" in each State: http://cspoa.org/sheriffs-gun-rights/

Shane, if you don't prefer answering me at all then why start fights? All I asked was if you spent time on the internet looking up shootings in America. It seemed like you knew a lot about them so I just curious. No need, to call me Mikey or say that I want to control everyone's post. I don't want to do that. It was a simple question that didn't need to involve sarcastic remarks. At first, I was going to ignore the insults about you being some kind of stupid liberal that everyone was calling you because it's mean. But, after those two remarks, I simply don't care. You turned a neutral person who niether hated or liked you into someone who really hates you. Hope you feel good now.

Funny thing happened last night at my house, about 9:45 we noticed to strange looking guys loitering at the end of our property, the neighbor called and said these two men had thrown rocks at her window before moving to our side of the street. I called the Sheriff , we waited over 45 mins for them to show up, they never did then my Hubby took matters into his own hands to remove these guys from our area. You want to take our guns away, the answer is no.

Artie Mah Brutha...If you are trying to convince the gun grabbers that their current hope to disarm America is driven by smoke and mirrors, you are pizzing up the proverbial rope.
