OPPORTUNITY: Wildomar Seeks Planning Commission Candidates

For those who may want a seat on the Wildomar Planning Commission, the city has a few ground rules.

The City of Wildomar is looking to appoint two planning commissioners and residents are invited to apply for the posts.

The five-member planning commission guides development in the city by voting for or against projects based on codes set forth

Planning commissioners are appointed by council members, and commissioners’ terms run concurrent with their appointing council members, explained Wildomar City Clerk Debbie Lee. As such, two planning commissioners -- Bob Devine and Harv Dykstra -- are currently affected. They were appointed by Wildomar City Council members Bob Cashman and Bridgette Moore, respectively. Even though Cashman and Moore have had no break in their service to the city, they are now in their second term after winning reelection Nov. 6.

“It is the same for the commissioners, their term has ended,” Lee explained. “Neither of the commissioners has resigned, [but] their terms have expired and therefore we must advertise for these seats.

“Bob and Harv are part of the inaugural planning commission and are the only two remaining from the initial five,” Lee added. “They were officially sworn in on November 19, 2008.”

Devine and Dykstra may be reappointed, or replacements may get the nod instead. Regardless, it will be up to Moore and Cashman -- they will make the appointments.

For those who may want a seat on the Wildomar Planning Commission, the city has a few ground rules.

“Planning commissioners will be expected to make potentially significant time commitments to both learning the job of planning commissioner, as well as regular attendance at planning commission meetings,” according to a news release from the city.

Qualifications to become a Wildomar planning commissioner include:

  • Must be a registered voter in the City of Wildomar
  • Must have lived in the city for at least the last year
  • May not be a city employee

Wildomar Planning Commission meetings are held the first Wednesday of each month beginning at 6:30 p.m. Planning commissioners are paid $75 per meeting.

Interested applicants can click here for a link to the application and supplemental questionnaire. The forms may also be picked up at City Hall located at 23873 Clinton Keith Rd., Suite 201, or by calling 951-677-7751.

All applications must be returned to Wildomar City Clerk Debbie Lee no later than Jan. 31, 2013.

Fined it interesting that the application for Planning Commission does not request California Driver's License nor Social Security Number but Park Oversight Committee does. Planning Commission also requires Form 700 Statement of Economic Interests but Park Oversight does not. Park Oversight application gives the city permission to run a background check but Planning Commission application does not. Park Oversight application is 8 pages long but Planning Commission is only 5 pages One would think the commission that controls the future of Wildomar's growth would either be more thorough or the Parks people have something to fear.

Absolutely spot on thinking, Ken. The Parks Oversight Committee application is so obviously slanted to encourage certain applicants and discourage others. Can't help but wonder if the selections for the committee have already been made? I doubt we will see any true oversight from this group when it is formed. Something the voters should take note of...and then remember when the city asks for yet more money in the form of another new tax. This is not the new beginning we had hoped for here in Wildomar.
