Property Tax Deadline Looms

April 10 is the official deadline, but because that day falls on a Sunday this year, the law allows the date to roll forward to the next business day.

Riverside County property owners have until 5 p.m. Monday to pay the final installment of their 2010-11 property taxes -- or face penalties.

April 10 is the official deadline, but because that day falls on a Sunday this year, the law allows the date to roll forward to the next business day.

The first installment of property taxes was due in December. According to the Treasurer-Tax-Collector's Office, 903,597 secured tax bills were sent out last fall.

It wasn't immediately clear how many of those bills had been paid.

According to Chief Deputy Treasurer-Tax Collector Melissa Johnson, anyone late on their second installment will be assessed a 10 percent penalty plus a $31 administrative fee.

Payments can be made online at http://www.treasurer-tax.co.riverside.ca.us/how_to_pay.aspx, via telephone at 951-955-3900, or by
mail at P.O. Box 12005, Riverside, CA  92502-2205.

Paying in person is also an option at any of the treasurer's offices in Palm Springs, Riverside and Temecula.

A 2 percent fee is added for credit card payments.

Property owners can dispute the assessed values of their homes or businesses by filing appeals to the Clerk of the Board's Office beginning in July.

The county's property tax receipts have plummeted roughly 15 percent over the last two years as the property tax rolls declined, cutting deeply into local government revenues. --City News Service
