Corona Wants Temescal Valley: Lake Elsinore's Neighbor Moving Closer

Corona and Lake Elsinore could become next-door neighbors if a proposed annexation gets approved.

Representatives from Riverside County agencies will attend the Temescal Valley Municipal Advisory Council meeting July 11 to answer questions and provide information to Temescal Valley residents about the city of Corona’s ongoing proposal to annex their community. Temescal Valley is currently within the city’s sphere of influence.

The proposal calls for adding to Corona 15.5 square miles and 15,000 people from the unincorporated community. The annexation area stretches from Weirick Road and extends east and west along the 15 Freeway to just south of the Sycamore Creek Shopping Center; the southern-most boundary would continue to extend west of the Indian Truck Trail/15 Freeway intersection. If approved, Corona’s city limits would move to within about two miles of Lake Elsinore’s boundaries.

According to a fiscal analysis prepared for the annexation, the benefit in annual revenues to the city of Corona is estimated at $6.8 million.

The deal is not done, however. As part of the annexation process, Riverside County’s Local Agency Formation Commission (LAFCO) will hold a protest hearing on the issue to determine whether the annexation will be put to Temescal Valley voters.

In the meantime, the 7 p.m. July 11 meeting will be held at the Sycamore Creek Swim Club, 25240 Mayhew Canyon Drive in Corona.

“Our goal is to provide Temescal Valley residents with the information they are seeking in order to make a self-determination about the future of their community,” said 1st District Supervisor Bob Buster, whose district includes Temescal Valley.

The city of Corona also has meetings scheduled on the issue July 10 at the Trilogy Club House (Trilogy residents only) from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.; and July 12 and 25 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Todd Elementary School's multi-purpose room located at 25105 Mayhew Canyon Road.

The Temescal Valley Municipal Advisory Council comprises appointees of the county supervisor and serves as an advisory panel to the Riverside County Board of Supervisors.
