Cancer Patients To Get Wigs As Part Of Lake Elsinore Hair-Cutting Event

On April 24, from 3 to 7 p.m. in the Railroad Canyon Elementary School Multipurpose Room, the public is invited to get a haircut and donate the sheared locks for wigs.

Railroad Canyon Elementary School’s Relay for Life team/Passion 4 a Cure is hosting a hair-cutting event that promises to be special.

On April 24, from 3 to 7 p.m. in the Railroad Canyon Elementary School Multipurpose Room, the public is invited to get a haircut and donate the sheared locks to Pantene Beautiful Lengths, a program that distributes wigs to cancer patients.

"This year, one of my students expressed interest in donating her hair to 'people with cancer,'" said event organizer and Railroad Canyon Elementary School teacher Jennifer Hamm. "I realized that more of our students may be interested in helping people get through the toughest battle of their lives and I wanted to bring that opportunity to my school community."

For those willing to shed their locks, all qualifying donated ponytails will be transformed into free, high-quality wigs for women undergoing cancer treatment, Hamm explained.

To make the most durable, beautiful wigs possible, she said donated hair must be a minimum of eight inches in length and have no more than a few strands of gray. Hair may be colored with vegetable dyes, rinses, or semi-permanent dyes, but cannot have been bleached, permanently colored, or chemically treated, Hamm explained.

“This is a hair cutting event where stylists will be cutting off your eight-inch ponytails to donate. However, if you’d like to have your hair cut elsewhere and donate your locks, please instruct your stylist to cut your hair for a donation and bring your bagged ponytail to our event,” she said.

Hamm said there will also be drop boxes for ponytails, April 1 – 26, at the following locations: Railroad Canyon Elementary School, Donald Graham Elementary School, Rice Canyon Elementary School, Terra Cotta Middle School and Ortega High School.

According to Hamm, the following local salons are also offering discounts to anyone who comes in the week of the event for a donation haircut and they will drop off your hair for you:
