Five Teachers Receive Grants For Water Awareness Projects

Teachers from Elsinore High School, Sycamore Academy, and Elsinore Middle School are the grant recipients.

Five teachers from within the Lake Elsinore Unified School District boundaries will receive grants for creative water awareness projects this year, according to a news release from Elsinore Valley Municipal Water District.

Ranging from elementary to high school, a variety of classroom workshops and experiments will be funded up to $700 through the Lois B. Krieger Water Project Grants for Educators for “engaging children in content about the importance of water conservation and maintaining safe and clean waterways,” the EVMWD news release stated.

This year’s grant recipients are as follows:

Kindergartners and first graders in Nona Jones' class at Sycamore Academy will learn about the water cycle through dramatic play, becoming siphons, waterwheels and funnels, and utilizing costumes and musical instruments to enhance the play.

Laurie Tate's sixth grade class at Elsinore Middle School will participate in the hands-on experience of visiting the San Jacinto Watershed and testing the water for phosphates, turbidity, and dissolved oxygen. They will examine algae and will compare their results to the Elsinore Valley Municipal Water District water quality reports.

Students from Elsinore High will be able to take advantage of many different water projects granted through the funding. Rick Wolter's students will recreate a watershed environment, complete with amphibians, fish and water plants in a 75-gallon simulation tank to study an active water cycle and watershed in the classroom.

Similar to Tate's project, Diane DeVasier's Elsinore High School students will experiment on the local waterways, testing the water for pollutants and algae and finding the results of the water quality.

John Madrid's Guitar Club of Elsinore High School will host a concert that encourages students to use re-usable water bottles, rather than plastic, to save water and money. This environmentally friendly concert will offer students their own aluminum water bottle and will tout messaging of conservation and water awareness.

The Lois B. Krieger Water Project Grants for Educators has funded local water projects annually for over 15 years. Funding is provided by Western Municipal Water District and grants are sponsored by the Water Education Advisory Council of Western Riverside County, of which, Elsinore Valley Municipal Water District is a member.

Educators of any grade K-12 in the EVMWD service area, whether public or private, are eligible to participate. Projects must focus on investigating the various properties of water, water quality, or effects of drought on the economy. Teachers are encouraged to utilize multiple disciplines to convey the message and creativity with projects is a plus. For more information on the Lois B. Krieger grants, visit www.evmwd.com/education.
