LEUSD Students Take Part In 28th Annual History Day

The competition encourages sixth- to 12th-graders to explore topics ranging from the Geneva Convention, the 1945 Yalta Agreement and the 1938 Munich Compromise.

Lake Elsinore Unified School District is represented at History Day by a team of students from Terra Cotta Middle School and one entry from Sycamore Academy Charter School.

LEUSD student exhibits include "How the Beatles were diplomats for democracy and took down the Iron Curtain," "How the Nazi's stole the art of Europe," "Surrender at Appomattox," "Debate over fashion," and "Colonial diplomacy with the Iroquois."

Students from Lake Elsinore Unified School District and from across Riverside County will be debating the high and low points of world events Saturday during the 28th annual History Day contest at Ramona High School in Riverside.

More than 200 students from 33 schools will participate, according to the Riverside County Office of Education. This year's theme is "Debate & Diplomacy in History: Successes, Failures and Consequences.''

The competition encourages sixth- to 12th-graders to explore topics ranging from the Geneva Convention, the 1945 Yalta Agreement and the 1938 Munich Compromise.

Student teams will be judged on exhibits, research papers and other documents that support their arguments. There will also be oral presentations, with team members offering pro and con perspectives.   

An awards ceremony is scheduled at the end of the competition. Winning teams will go on to compete in the California History Day Finals, April 28 to May 1, in San Jose.

A national contest is scheduled for June 12 - 16 at the University of Maryland.

Tomorrow's event is scheduled to get underway starting at 9 a.m. Ramona High School is located at 7675 Magnolia Avenue in Riverside. --City News Service contributed to this report.
