LEUSD Suspension Rates Lower Than State And County Averages

The expulsion rate for LEUSD students was slightly higher than state and county averages.

Compared to state and county averages, fewer students from the Lake Elsinore Unified School District were suspended during the 2011-12 school year, according to data released Friday by the California Department of Education.

In the LEUSD, a total of 1,094 students were suspended and 78 expelled among the more than 20,000 enrolled in the district during the 2011-12 school year, the data show. The suspension rate was 4.5 percent and the expulsion rate was 0.3 percent.

The data show a total of 366,629 students suspended and 9,553 students expelled among the more than six million public school students in California enrolled during the 2011-12 school year, correlating to a suspension rate of 5.7 percent and an expulsion rate of 0.1 percent.

County wide, among the more than 400,000 students enrolled during the 2011-12 school year, 26,843 were suspended or 6 percent; students expelled totaled 988 or 0.2 percent.

“Common sense tells us that we cannot teach students who are not in school,” said Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson. “I hope that parents, teachers, administrators, and students see this information as the starting point for discussions about how to find alternatives to suspension that sustain healthy learning environments while keeping as many students as possible in class.”
