LEUSD Teachers Receive Grants For Classroom Projects

The money will go toward furthering classroom projects ranging from purchasing iPods for a Kindergarten learning center, to new books, curriculum materials, assemblies, and a field trip to the San Diego Wild Animal Park.

Thanks to the generosity of the Assistance League of Temecula Valley, the has an additional $5,000 in its coffers.

But the cash isn't going to the district per se. Instead, the money was dispersed to 10 LEUSD teachers who each received a $500 piece of the pie. The money will go toward furthering classroom projects ranging from purchasing , to new books, curriculum materials, assemblies, and a field trip to the San Diego Wild Animal Park.

“The 10 winners were selected for having the best classroom project proposals from 40 applications, which all showed merit,” said Suzanne Dechert, Assistance League of Temecula Valley scholarships chair.

The grant winners were recognized by League members during a special presentation ceremony held at LEUSD’s main office on Feb. 16.

The winning teachers and their classroom projects are summarized below:

Melody Sellers, Earl Warren Elementary -- Purchase of “Imagination Station Classroom DVD Series,” a first-grade listening, thinking, and reading skills application.

Gregg Gurney, Ronald Reagan Elementary -- Purchasing a progress monitoring system entitled “Reach” with 65 lessons for mastery of curriculum for learners who are failing to achieve.

Betty Lightfoot, Earl Warren Elementary -- To provide a resource classroom library for third-graders with Accelerated Reader books that can be taken home nightly for homework.

Kay Clapper, Lakeland School -- Special assistance for seventh-grade social studies with the purchase of data collections about the Renaissance period, China, and the Rise of Islam.

Christine Chase and the fourth-grade team, Withrow Elementary -- Grant will offset the cost of presenting the “Pioneer Living Assembly” program to be scheduled for the spring.

Desiree Duplessis, Wildomar Elementary -- Purchase books at the first-grade level that have Accelerated Reader quizzes available on the computer.

Lorie McCormick, Cottonwood Canyon Elementary -- Purchase a collection of books by the “Wright Group” to be used by seven first-grade teachers to enhance reading skills of struggling readers.

Kathleen Wishard and Jean Little, Luiseno K-8 School -- 140 third-grade students will benefit from word activities at a school wide “Vocabulary Day.” Vocabulary expansion, fluency, and writing skills are included.

Linda Elrod, William Collier Elementary – First-grade field trip to the San Diego Wild Animal Park as a culminating activity to the study of environmental habitats of animals and plant life.

The Assistance League of Temecula Valley is a non-profit organization that supports students and educators through a variety of programs, including classroom grants for teachers, and Operation School Bell, which provides new clothing for needy students.
