Luiseño Fourth-Graders Honored For Artwork

The students' entries were just two from more than 1,900 submissions.

The artwork of two Luiseño fourth-graders will be celebrated throughout 2014.

The students, John Dizon and Angie Sichak, were acknowledged for their exceptional artwork at the Metropolitan Water District BeWaterWise.com calendar celebration on December 12.

Students from Lake Elsinore Unified School District, Herk Bouris Elementary in Menifee Union School District, and Sycamore Academy of Science and Cultural Arts in Wildomar annually participate in the Elsinore Valley Municipal Water District’s Poster Art Contest for a chance to be featured in the calendar.

Through EVMWD’s Educational Programs, elementary school students are encouraged to create artwork that focuses on water conservation.

The students’ entries were just two from over 1,900 submissions in the EVMWD service area. An additional 156 finalists from around Southern California were submitted to the regional contest, of which only 36 were chosen.

John and Angie were honored at Metropolitan Water District’s Annual Award Ceremony on December 12 at their Los Angeles headquarters.

“What caught our eye about both John and Angie’s artwork was their simple yet concise water saving messages, as well as their creative approach to illustrating their messages,” said Yvette Martinez, Section Manager of Conservation & Community Services at Metropolitan Water District.

Not only was this a special year for these students, because two winners were chosen, but both students happened to be from the same class. John and Angie were fourth graders in Kim Schmits' class at Luiseño School when they created their posters. Schmits accompanied them to the awards ceremony.

"I am so proud of our talented students. I am honored to be part of this special day celebrating the art created by John and Angie.” said Schmits.
