Chicago Cubs Tap Former Lake Elsinore Storm Manager To Lead

Rick Renteria is the first ever Storm skipper to manage in the Major Leagues.

The following is a news release from the Lake Elsinore Storm:

Former Lake Elsinore Storm manager and San Diego Padres Bench Coach Rick Renteria has been announced as the 53rd manager in the history of the Chicago Cubs. Renteria is the first ever Storm skipper to manage in the Major Leagues.

Renteria joined the Storm in 2003 as the hitting coach under manager Jeff Gardner. In 2004, Renteria was named manager and was at the helm for three seasons. During his tenure the Storm went 212-206 (.507), reaching the playoffs twice including capturing the South Division Championship in 2005.

In 1998, Renteria got his first managerial job with the Brevard County Manatees, the Single-A affiliate of the Florida Marlins. After his stint with the Storm he managed one season with the Padres Triple-A affiliate, the Portland Beavers.

He joined the Padres as the first base coach for the 2008 season and has spent the last three years as manager Bud Black’s bench coach. In 2013 he was chosen to manage Mexico in the World Baseball Classic. 

As a player, he was a first-round (20th overall) selection by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 1980 First-Year Player Draft. He played five Major League seasons with the Pirates, Seattle Mariners & Marlins and had a career average of .237 with 20 doubles, two triples, four home runs and 41 RBI in 184 games. Renteria also played professionally in Mexico, and in 1991 was named the Mexican League Player of the Year, winning the batting title with a .442 average. 

Rick and his wife Ilene currently reside in Temecula and are the proud parents of three sons and a daughter.
