Elsinore High Vaults Into CIF Masters

Elsinore High pole vaulter Richard Leverson turns in a strong performance at the CIF Track And Field Finals Saturday at Cerritos College.

Elsinore High School senior Richard Leverson advanced to the CIF Masters Meet thanks to a strong showing at Saturday's CIF-Southern Section Divisional Finals at Cerritos College.

Leverson was one of eight to clear 14 feet, 9 inches on the vault, assuring himself of another week of competition.

El Toro High School's Adam Bragg and Newport Harbor's Mark Sakioka had the best marks of the day, tying for first place overall at 16-3.

The top nine finishers (top 12 in the 800, 1,600, 3,200 and field events) from Saturday advanced to the two-day CIF Masters Meet that begins on Friday at Cerritos College.

The top five from Masters and those that reach automatic qualifying marks, advance to the CIF State Meet on June 3 - 4 in Clovis.

Vista Murrieta won the Division 1 team championship for the boys with Loyola (Division 2), Sherman Oaks Notre Dame (Division 3) and Serra (Division 4) also claiming titles.

Long Beach Poly (Division 1), Mater Dei (Division 2), Harvard Westlake (Division 3) and Serra (Division 4) were the girls champions.

Elsinore's Joe Quinonez and Erica Williams competed in the Division 2 300-meter hurdle races. Quinonez took seventh place (38.99) and Williams finished in sixth overall (46.02).

Temescal Canyon senior Jessica Johnson  earned an alternate spot for next week's meet, finishing third in the Division 3 shot put. Her 38-11.50 throw came just short of Paramount's Ruby Aliimatafitafi qualfying mark of 39-04.25.

Johnson's teammate Arica Nassar finished right behind Johnson in the shot put, finishing fourth at 38-06.50.
