Lakeside Inches Past Colton into Finals

The Lancers score two second half goals to knock off the host Yellowjackets 2-1 in a CIF-Southern Section semifinal game.

The difference between winning and losing is often a matter of inches.

That was no more true Tuesday as Lakeside knocked off host Colton in the semifinals of the Division 5 CIF-Southern Section Ford boys soccer championships.

Lakeside goaltender Jose Chavez was able to get enough of his hand on a penalty shot late in the game to preserve his team's 2-1 victory over the Yellowjackets on Tuesday.

On the other end of the field, Colton goaltender Kenny Koperski had a penalty shot by Ricky Ruiz glance off his hand and into the net with the winning goal with about 20 minutes remaining in the game.

With the win, the Lancers will play in the championship game against fellow first-time finalist Cajon either Friday or Saturday at either Mission Viejo High School or Downey High School. The time and site will be determined Wednesday.

Colton took a 1-0 lead in the first half on a goal by Ismael Carlin. That held up until about 8 minutes into the second half when Jesus Herrera converted on the rebound of a shot that bounced off a Colton wall.
