Nationally Ranked Track Star From Lakeside High Competing In NCAA Championships

Jacob Deavers hails from Lake Elsinore and graduated from Lakeside High School.

A hometown son from Lake Elsinore is competing at the prestigious NCAA Division II Track & Field National Championships this weekend, a three-day event hosted by Colorado State Pueblo.

, a senior at Cal Poly Pomona who attended Lakeside High School, is making his second appearance on the track and field national stage. At the 2011 NCAA championships in Turlock, Calif., Deavers finished seventh in the 400-meter hurdles event to earn All-American recognition.

This year the hurdler is competing in the 400-meter again. On Thursday, he finished eighth in the prelim with a time of 52.35, which qualified him for the finals scheduled at 6:30 p.m. (PDT) Saturday.

Deavers raced to a career-best 52.18 in the 400-meter hurdles on two different occasions in 2012. The first came during day one of the Cal/Nevada Invitational in Claremont while the second took place on the final day of the California Collegiate Athletic Association Championships. The 52.18 ranks fifth all-time in the Cal Poly Pomona Broncos' record books and puts Deavers at No. 15 nationally going into the Division II Championships.

At Lakeside, Deavers was a four-sport letter winner (track and field, football, wresting and cross country). During his senior year, he reached CIF preliminaries in both the 110-meter hurdles and the 300-meter hurdles and was crowned league champion in both events. He also ran on CIF-qualifying 4 x 100 and 4 x 400 relays teams during his senior year.
