A Wildomar resident took a top spot this week in the 2011 Golf Channel Am Tour Senior National Championships in La Quinta, a major golf media outlet is reporting.

According to a Sept. 26 Golf Channel report, Wildomar resident Joe Strong, 79, fell just behind first-place finisher Joseph Burns, 55, of Marathon, Fla., in the Snead Flight competition last weekend. Burns shot an 87.

“The two ran away from the field, with third place finisher Richard Naef of Waldo, Wis., finishing 11 shots behind,” the Golf Channel reported.

The field for the National Championships was vast, with 444 competitors from across the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico.

“The 72-hole tournament was contested at four La Quinta-area golf courses and headlined by famed PGA West,” according to the report.

The open division of the Golf Channel Am Tour National Championships kicked off Sept. 26 with 574 players.
