As the temperature hovered in the low 90s and thunderstorm warnings were issued for the county, dry lightning appeared in the skies above Southwest Riverside County.
The wind began to blow in Lake Elsinore about 2:30 p.m., just as the National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Riverside County.
Thunder began shortly after 3 p.m. in Temecula, where flashes of dry lightning rent the sky.
Clouds massed as thunderclaps could be heard in the distance.
And then it began to rain in Temecula -- fat, cool drops falling to a backdrop of jagged slashes in the sky.
The NWS warned that if one can hear thunder, one is close enough to be struck by lightning.
