Thunder, Lightning, Wind, Rain in Southwest Riverside County

Dry lightning flashes could be seen in the skies above Lake Elsinore, Temecula and Murrieta Saturday, In the midst of a severe thunderstorm warning and in 93-degree heat.

As the temperature hovered in the low 90s and thunderstorm warnings were issued for the county, dry lightning appeared in the skies above Southwest Riverside County.

The wind began to blow in Lake Elsinore about 2:30 p.m., just as the National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Riverside County.

Thunder began shortly after 3 p.m. in Temecula, where flashes of dry lightning rent the sky.

Clouds massed as thunderclaps could be heard in the distance.

And then it began to rain in Temecula -- fat, cool drops falling to a backdrop of jagged slashes in the sky.

The NWS warned that if one can hear thunder, one is close enough to be struck by lightning.

It's raining and the wind is blowing, heard on the news to watch out for tornados near March AF Base

It's awesome! Too bad it's short lived. It'd be better if it lasted longer than it did. Rain only lasted 5 mins here in east murrieta.
Mike Garcia August 11, 2012 at 10:57 PM
It was hitting 108 degrees here in West Murrieta!

STILL hearing thunder in Harveston. The storm passed directly overhead but is a bit more distant now. Nice to have interesting weather; hope everyone is okay.

I have had the warnings from the weather channel long before the clouds moved in, around noon.

Just finished cleaning the debris off the patios and out of the pool, it looks really dark towards the north, are we expecting more rain and thunder, it is really still out, kind of eerie.

That was strange! from Murrita off of California Oaks a little ways up hill from Hancock. Lots of thunder around 3 pm. I went outside to look around at 3:15. Lots of thunder, sounded like inside or above the clouds overhead. But I could SEE NO LIGHTNING. Normally whenever I hear loud thunder I see the lightning that caused I could see over Temecula too, but could see no lightning. [One time several years ago lightening did hit a house several blocks from here I htink it was first attracted to a nearby tree that was higher than the house, then jumped to the house and started a fire in the upstairs bedroom.] Anyhow today Saturday, It had cooled to about 90 by then. I decided to dig in my yard awhile. Then it started raining, I was under a larger tree, so I did not get very wet so I kept digging. Large drops, but it did not last long. Quiet for a few minutes, then thunder again, same thing, no visble lightning, Quiet again, then thunder, then rain, large drops, kept working. There were about five distinct times it rained and wet the driveway, dried off, rained again. All together there was only about 1/8 inch total at my house, well maybe there some of it evaporated before I measured it.

John, what area are you in? The NWS had several warnings out. We are going out to look at some storm damage in the north part of Temecula. Jim Purpura Meteorologist WeatherCurrents.com

The NWS issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Temecula yesterday for these storms. The warning mentioned a tornado was possible. There was indication of some weak rotation on Doppler Radar. We have some reports of wind damage in the north portion of Temecula. We are going to survey damage, and report. Kudos to NWS on this warning.
