Lake Elsinore Fire Burns Structures, Vehicles; Explosions Heard

8/17 UPDATE: The fire that swept through a Lake Elsinore neighborhood Wednesday afternoon has left two people displaced.

One man and one woman were left homeless by the blaze, which was first reported at 3:23 p.m. in the neighborhood of Red Gum Road and Tereticornis Avenue, according to Cal Fire/Riverside County Fire Department spokeswoman Melody Hendrickson.

The fire, which was contained to one-acre shortly after 4 p.m., destroyed two singlewide mobile homes, one pre-fab residence, and five vehicles, Hendrickson said.

Riverside County Sheriff's Department evacuated residents in the area along Tereticornis and Walnut avenues as well as Red Gum Lane.

According to Riverside County Sheriff’s Department radio reports, ammunition was firing inside at least one of the burning structures, but the reports are unconfirmed.

A Patch reporter on scene heard explosions and residents in the neighborhood were spotted watering down rooftops.

Patrick Schoppet, 22, who lives on Walnut Avenue, said he stayed behind to water down his roof.

"I just did not want my home to burn down," he said. ( to read more reactions from neighborhood residents.)

Schoppet's residence was spared, but he risked injury from downed powerlines and "extreme danger," according to officials on scene.

Eighty-two firefighters, 11 engines and seven overhead personnel were on scene.

There are no reports of injuries, according to Hendrickson, but American Medical Response was on scene attending to a separate incident, she said.

The cause of the blaze is under investigation.

A Patch reporter on scene has confirmed hearing explosions, and some residents are watering down rooftops.

Powerlines are down in the area and there is "extreme danger," according to officials on scene.

The blaze has burned one acre, according to Hendrickson.

Seventy-one firefighters, 11 engines and seven overhead personnel are on scene.
