Animal Lovers: City Of Lake Elsinore Needs You!

"We still desperately need volunteers," said Jennifer Boren, who works in the city's Human Resources Department.

The City of Lake Elsinore is looking for animal lovers who want to volunteer time -- and get in great shape doing it!

Earlier this spring, the city invited anyone who has some spare time to volunteer with the City’s Animal Canvassing Program.

The program involves going door-to-door delivering door-hangers that publicize the need for animal licensing.

“We still desperately need volunteers,” said Jennifer Boren, who works in the city’s Human Resources Department.

Volunteers will receive orientation from Animal Friends of the Valleys and the City’s Human Resources Division prior to being sent into the field. The canvassers will carry door hangers that contain information, in both English and Spanish, on the importance of pet licensing.

Additionally, the door hanger offers a coupon for new animal licensing and a temporary waiver of late fees.

According to the city’s website, approximately 9,600 dogs and 11,700 cats live in Lake Elsinore. Data from 2009 shows 5,076 dogs and 856 cats were licensed in the city. Therefore, the estimated compliance rate for dog and cat licensing is 52 percent and 7 percent, respectively, the website states.

Licensing can help save pets’ lives by identifying animal owners. In 2009, 596 dogs and 712 cats found in Lake Elsinore that were temporarily housed at the local animal shelter ultimately had to be euthanized, according to the city.
