List Of 9/11 Events And Services For Sunday

A roundup of events and services scheduled Sunday in remembrance of September 11, 2001.

Services and events marking the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks are planned throughout western Riverside County Sunday, including:

--At 6:30 a.m., four giant American flags will be unfurled on each side of the Riverside County Administrative Center in downtown Riverside, remaining there for 11 days in honor of the victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.

Supervisor John Tavaglione is hosting the 9/11 anniversary flag ceremony. Sheriff Stan Sniff and other elected officials, along with military veterans, are expected to join Tavaglione for the unfurling.

--At 8 a.m., the "Salute to Heroes'' 5K run/walk will raise funds for a memorial in Palm Springs. The event starts at the Ramon Alternative Center, 2248 Ramon Road, next to the Palm Springs High School Auditorium.

Run fees are $25 and each participant receives a goodie bag and commemorative tag.

--At exactly 9:11 a.m., all 167 Stater Bros. supermarkets in Southern California will cease operations for a moment of silence Sunday to honor the victims of 9/11.
  
At the appointed time, managers at each of the Inland Empire-based chain's stores will ask shoppers to stand quietly for 60 seconds to pay homage.

Throughout the day, Stater Bros. employees will also be handing out 9/11 tribute posters to shoppers. According to the company, the posters were created immediately after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks as a tribute to the victims and their families.

--At 10 a.m. in Perris, a ceremony honoring the 9/11 victims, military veterans, police and firefighters is scheduled at American Legion Post 595 at Sixth and D streets.

Perris Mayor Pro Tem Joanne Evans, a native New Yorker and former Marine, will emcee the event, joined by her colleagues on the city council, as well as sheriff's deputies and firefighters.

The California Military Institute Honor Guard will hoist the Stars & Stripes, and legionnaires will ring a bell for each of the roughly 3,000 people killed during the attacks in New York, Pennsylvania and Washington, D.C.

--At 10 a.m. in Temecula, members of the city council and other officials will gather for a brief remembrance service outside the Civic Center, 41-000 Main St.

A candlelight vigil is also planned in the city at 6 p.m. along the shores of the Duck Pond, Terra Vista and Ynez roads. Participants will place lit candles on floats that will be cast into the water in memory of 9/11 victims.

--Beginning at 11 a.m., in Wildomar will honor those who serve by hosting a special event that will see pet adoption fees waived for all military, police and fire department families.

Many of the animals are already spayed and neutered and ready to go home that day with approved application.

There will also be special giveaways with each adoption, and the shelter will feature family-friendly activities such as announcing the winner of the mascot-naming contest and a hot-dog-an-ice-cream lunch.  for more information.

--At 3:30 p.m., the city of Riverside will hold a 90-minute service, "Riverside Remembers 9/11 -- Ten Years Later.'' The interfaith event will be hosted in the City Hall Breezeway, 9th and Main streets.

Featured speakers include Riverside Fire Department Deputy Chief Dave Lesh, who led the Riverside County Urban Search & Rescue team's recovery operation at the site of the World Trade Center immediately following the twin towers' collapse.

Riverside police Chief Sergio Diaz will also speak, along with U.S. Air Force Col. Mary Aldrain from March Air Reserve Base, Pastor Rick Shutte of Harvest Christian Fellowship, Rabbi Suzanne Singer of Temple Beth El and Omar Zaki of the Islamic Center of Riverside.

The Arlington High School choir will lead attendees in patriotic songs, followed by a military aircraft flyby.

--At 4 p.m., the city of Beaumont will hold a "Day of Remembrance'' at Stewart Park, Maple and Orange avenues. According to organizers, the 4Troops band -- comprised of four veterans of the Afghanistan and Iraq campaigns -- will perform a concert. Residents directly impacted by 9/11 will offer testimonials, and the New Creation Choir will sing patriotic hymnals.

Beaumont Mayor Brian De Forge will close the service with personal observations about the terrorist attacks and the transition America went through as a result.

--At 6 p.m., , located at 19740 Grand Avenue, invites all to a 9/11 Remembrance featuring the ROTC, bagpipes, tributes to emergency personnel and more.
