Slideshow: Lake Elsinore-Wildomar Honors Its Fallen Heroes

While skydivers displayed the stars and stripes, hundreds gathered at Lake Elsinore Cemetery to honor the soldiers who died for the country.

Memorial services began at about 10 a.m. on Monday at Lake Elsinore Cemetery and Wildomar Cemetery. During Monday’s services, skydivers displayed flags that fluttered in the air as they descended to the ground.

Each cemetery saw at least 500 people in attendance with many sitting on a freshly cut lawn and white plastic chairs. Flags planted near headstones flapped back and forth in the light breeze, while service men and women talked about their experiences during combat.

“I wanted to protect my people, my county and my flag, which it still stands,” said 81-year-old Don Chamblian, who enlisted in the army at the age of 19 and fought in the Korean War. “I feel like it was an honor and privilege to do my part, and I did... and I came home.”

Chamblian’s grandfather fought in the Civil War.

“I felt like him... it was an honor,” said Chamblian.

The men and women who lost their lives did it proudly knowing they were fighting to protect the free land that we walk on today, added Chamblian.

“They gave their life for their county and for you... don’t feel sad that they are gone but rather remember them for what they did,” he said.

In 1951, Chamblian boarded his flight to head overseas to fight in a battle that began June 25, 1950.

“I felt like I was doing the right thing, and I’m sorry I did not do it before,” Chamblian said.

Chamblian put on his original uniform for Monday’s service for the first time since about 1956.

At Monday’s ceremony, the American Legion provided an information stand to inform the public of the services they provide and to have people sign up to become a member.

“We are remembering all the people who have died protecting our county and our rights,” said Todd Kerrn, 49, of Wildomar who is a member of American Legion post 200.

“Stand strong and we support you,” added Kerrn whose son is on active duty.
