Can We Ban Trucks From Ortega Highway?

Multi-axle trucks should be banned from Ortega Highway!

My husband and I have been making the commute up and over Highway 74 (Ortega) for almost 10 years. We have driven solo and we have carpooled, and we have seen our fair share.

My husband was stuck near Hell's Kitchen in 2009 when the road was closed. That was when we got snow up there. The road was not closed due to the weather, however, it was closed due to the guy who thought it would be fun to drive off the side to attempt suicide.

Lucky for my husband, he was close enough to Hell's Kitchen that he was able to make his way to the parking lot. They stayed open for those who wanted to come in and keep warm.

Most recently there was a motorist who drove into a ravine on the Orange County side. We could go on and on with all the stories of being stuck up there due to a traffic accident.

My blog idea is to share and discuss my feelings of banning multi-axle trucks from the Ortega. I see the multi-axle trucks taking the Ortega as a means to cut off some time and miles from deliveries in order to make more of a profit. Most of these trucks will cruise through the canyon between 30 to 40 mph. That is significantly slower than most cars want to drive through there.

Slow cars and slow trucks are what cause dangerous situations for the rest of us.  I am not saying that driving erratically through there is the answer, but driving at what most of us consider a normal rate of speed would keep others from trying to pass in non-passing zones and risking lives.

These trucks are the worst. They are slow, they kick up rocks, and I feel they are nothing more than a danger to the rest of us. It is bad enough that we need to worry about falling rocks from the mountainside, but now we have to watch for falling trucks? What if there was a car at the wrong place at the wrong time that got flattened by the truck? I have been wanting for years to try and find out how we can ban trucks from that highway!
