Alleged Carjacker Scared Off By Bystander, Police Issue Warning

When residents see a crime in progress, they should not place themselves in danger or confront suspects who could be armed, a sheriff's sergeant is warning.

A Corona man is behind bars on suspicion of trying to carjack a driver’s Mercedes Benz.

It was a bystander who apparently saved the day, but police are warning heroic acts can be very dangerous.

The incident began Tuesday shortly after 11 a.m. when deputies at the Perris Police Department got a call about a carjacking in the 700 block of Ramona Expressway in Perris.

A motorist had just parked his Mercedes when a man walked up to him and threatened to kill him if he did not hand over the car keys, according to a report from Sgt. Ralph Rico.

“Fearing for his safety, the citizen gave his keys to the suspect and yelled for help,” Rico reported.

A bystander saw the commotion and scared the suspect away, the sergeant explained in his report.

The alleged carjacker took off on foot into a nearby residential area but was quickly nabbed by deputies who found him in the 4200 block of Brennan Avenue.

Jorge Luis Reyna, 29, was arrested and booked into the Robert Presley Detention Center on suspicion of carjacking, according to Rico.

“The Perris Police Department would like to remind citizens to call 911, if at all possible, when they see a crime in progress, and not place themselves in danger or confront suspects who may or may not be armed,” Rico advised in his report.

If you witnessed this carjacking or have any information regarding this investigation, call Deputy J. Lagman at the Perris Station, at 951-210-1000.
