UPDATED JAN 17: A man who police describe as possibly armed was shot and killed by deputies in Lake Elsinore Thursday night.

The incident began shortly before 6 p.m. when officers from the Lake Elsinore Police Department received a call about an assault with a deadly weapon. The suspect vehicle was described as a gold colored Ford Crown Victoria and included a partial license plate.

Nearly two hours later, an officer with the Lake Elsinore Police Department spotted a car matching the description parked at Tom's Burgers on Dexter Avenue.

Backup deputies arrived at the scene and police say they ordered the suspect, who was behind the wheel, to get out of the car.

"The suspect ignored the officer’s commands and started the vehicle," according to a report from sheriff's Deputy Albert Martinez. "The officers asked the suspect to turn off the engine and the suspect refused to comply."

Martinez reported the suspect then shifted the car into reverse, backing up toward the officers.

"As an officer was attempting to move out of the path, the suspect’s vehicle ran over his foot," Martinez reported.

Four officers then fired on the suspect, an adult male, who died at the scene, Martinez said. His name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

There was a female passenger inside the car but she was not injured, Martinez continued.

"She was questioned and released," he added.

Investigators from the Lake Elsinore Sheriff's Station and the Riverside County Sheriff's Department Central Homicide Unit responded to the scene and took over the investigation that lasted into the morning hours.

The one officer was treated for his injury, but there were no reports of other injuries.

All officers involved in the shooting have been placed on paid administrative leave per department policy and the investigation is continuing.

ORIGINAL POST JAN. 16: A police investigation that has been ongoing in Lake Elsinore Thursday night is believed to be a shooting, although police have not confirmed details at press time.

Tom's Burgers at 18492 Dexter Avenue was surrounded by patrol cars and roped off by police tape through much of Thursday night and the street was closed to thru traffic near the restaurant's driveway. As part of the large-scale investigation, the Riverside County Sheriff's Department homicide and forensic teams were present.

Deputies said there is no risk to the public.

Rumors have been spreading online about what may have happened, but police would not confirm or deny any reports. Instead, they said investigators were getting set to convene a debriefing and details would be released to the public and reporters shortly.

Clerks at two nearby gas stations said they did not see or hear anything pertaining to the incident, although one clerk said she was told that a suspect was shot by police.

Check back for updates.

congratulations on the officer who sacrificed his steel-toed boot, allowing his partners to dispatch this criminal alien marauder from our nation. if only there were a quota.....
Steve Newman January 17, 2014 at 02:14 PM
Alek- there is q quota for illegal jihadists- go home .
Libi Uremovic January 17, 2014 at 05:17 PM
so all it takes to get the police to murder someone for you is nothing more than a phone call ....??? did it ever occur to the cops that the person that called in the complaint could be an ex girlfriend or someone that just wanted to harass him ....???
Andria January 18, 2014 at 01:14 AM
In the past, I've pretty much always held the assumption that the police are (almost) always right. In the past year, I've seen more and more questionable shootings and excessive use of force by police and no longer believe that. The Fullerton trial where those murdering police officers just got off "not guilty" is a prime example. And that was with clear video showing them harassing a defenseless homeless schizophrenic man who was known to the community! Cops are out of control.
Alek J Hidell January 18, 2014 at 01:30 AM
It's called clearing out the crazies and the riff-raff from our cities and running them out into the Obamavilles in the scrub. Kelly Thomas was a tweeking street loon who hassled people for years... Since our bankrupt State is going to open its prisons we had better get used to seeing the police shoot the mad dogs roaming about. Happened in the last depression as well.
Andria January 18, 2014 at 02:06 AM
"Crazies and riff-raff"? "Tweeking street loon"? An incredibly disrespectful way to reference the homeless and mentally ill, and quite a generalization, Mr, Hidell.
Marjie January 18, 2014 at 02:22 AM
Why would judge someone ftom things you hear from the media ...Kelly Thomas was homeless and maybe annoying but he was human like it not .....should human life have no worth just because you don't live up to society standards ..bull shit he had a lovong family ...its hard to force someone to get help if they don't want it but no matter what no body deserves to be beaten and killed by the very authority thst is supposed to protect and serve ....also in this story why did four cops fire on him ....for a traffic stop on hearsay ...really I bet if that happened to a loved one they would feel the pain this two victim/criminal s family feels. ...hope they can sleep at night ..it terrifies me to think that cops are that trigger happy ...shame shame! !!@@@

I know this Patch article wasn't supposed to be about Kelly Thomas, but I guess I brought it there. In any event, I found an informative article - http://www.renegadepopo.com/who-was-kelly-thomas.php - that may round out the story. However, I disagree with the author in one way. YES, police officers should have some basic mental health training since they are dealing with people. After all, they are often the ones called out to assess for 5150's and they are dealing with the mentally ill on the streets. Shouldn't they have enough training to know how to not escalate an encounter with a schizophrenic individual, and enough heart left to not take pleasure in dominance?
Libi Uremovic January 18, 2014 at 06:38 AM
'...Shouldn't they have enough training to know how to not escalate an encounter with a schizophrenic individual, and enough heart left to not take pleasure in dominance? ...' ......................yes they 'should' ......................... we've allowed our services to be cut and infrastructure to crumble while doubling our police forces ... now we are receiving the results of our poor choices... and to all of those that support police corruption: you think government corruption is 'acceptable' because it doesn't directly effect you, but allowing our police forces to get out of control cost the taxpayer millions .... million in excessive wages and equipment.....millions in court costs and reparation payments..... the people of fullerton allow their cops to 'get away with murder', now the citizens not only have to pay for both sides of a murder trial but they will also have to pay for a civil lawsuit to pay off the family for allowing their public servants to execute their kid... they will either have to raise their property taxes, sales taxes, or fees to pay the expenses - no, the money will not fall from the heavens..... in a democracy; we either control our government or we pay the price for not controlling our government ....

I think its curious that Lake Elsinore scheduled a police DUI checkpoint last night, just doing their job. . . and the information the Authorities did release was formulaic, standard CYA. I want to know why a couple sitting at a fast food restaurant were shot at.
ChrisG January 18, 2014 at 09:38 AM
They were shot at because he tried running the police over. He was killed because he tried to kill the cop by running him down. Do you not understand that?
ChrisG January 18, 2014 at 09:40 AM
Regarding Kelly Thomas, very unfortunate. His parents tried to get him help for years. Until our country readdresses the problem of mental illness and puts these people in institutions more of this is likely to occur. The sane have rights too.
Mimi January 18, 2014 at 10:22 AM
But there is something missing here that we are not getting: He was suspected to be the person they were looking for, suspected of having a gun so it's natural to ask, suspected of trying to flee? The woman in the car was released, if he were the guy they were looking for she would/could have been an accomplice, or victim? Something is not right. Officers administered some form of justice, but that's not their job.
Pauly January 18, 2014 at 11:32 AM
The police are supposed to "Protect and to serve" , now its more like "Heckle and disturb" but that is not saying its a good idea to drive your car at an officer, in fact its an almost sure way to get shot.
jim January 18, 2014 at 11:23 PM
This man was sitting there with his girl friend, he was visiting his father who lives in lake elsinore, while he was sitting their with his girl friend the cops surrounded him , he was scared, he was on the phone with his mother while the cops were ordering out of the car his mother was telling him to get out of the car and comply. His mother listened while the cops massacred him in front of his girl friend
jim January 18, 2014 at 11:24 PM
also he wasnt involved with the so called stabbing incident, it was a total case of mistaken identity
Chris Wright January 19, 2014 at 12:14 AM
it was my good friend who got shot and because he backed over a cops foot who wears still toes its justifiable to shoot him dead??? it isn't fair nor will it ever be he was 28 years old his 29th bday is this month and wont be able to celebrate it!! the cops had him surrounded he couldn't leave anyway so why didn't they pull him outta the car? why is it OK for cops to murder people? so do you think Kelly Thomas deserved to get beat to death because he was defending himself it makes me sick the police are the biggest gang in the world and another person is dead because of they're abuse in power
Chris Wright January 19, 2014 at 12:17 AM
@chrisG EXCUSE ME fuck you dude have some respect he wasn't mentally retarded he was scared and was getting blamed for something he didn't do!! like i said they had him surrounded he couldn't go anywhere and some retard called and said he had a knife that's such bullshit he ran over the cops foot omg lets murder him that's the fucking answer right? justifiable homicide?? he was a friend a good friend at that, don't be a disrespectful asshole have a little compassion!! you defend them all you want i don't care, but don't disrespect my friend like that its rude. yeah he should of complied he didn't, who knows what was going through his head! and his girlfriend was with him if they would of killed her then what? did she assault them too?? they could of pulled him out beat him up like they beat everyone up and charged him the correct way not murder him he didn't have gun he didn't try to kill the officer what if the officer was in his blind side and he didn't see him when he backed up he accidentally ran him over?? i know he wasn't trying to hurt anyone period, your an asshole for your words towards my friend..
Dale Harris January 19, 2014 at 09:29 PM
this is a sick world this country has become, especially the law enforcement. now a friend ive known for years gets cut down and friends and family get to live on an wonder what life would have been like, if his life had not been ended needlessly
ChrisG January 19, 2014 at 09:47 PM
Your friend died because he wasn't smart. Why am I the asshole? You admit he made foolish choices by not complying with the cops yet you blame the police for your friends death. You call me an ass? You better reevaluate. Your friends death sucks but that's on him. Hopefully you're consoling his poor mother. I know this isn't what you want to hear but it's the truth. There will be an investigation. If the cops overstepped the law will deal with them.
Mimi January 20, 2014 at 05:59 PM
Why are there no updates in the media about this case? IT's been 4 days and nothing. It's okay to question everything about this story because it did not make sense from the beginning. An officer was in danger? An officer's foot was run over but not hospitalized? It took 4 officers to take down the threat?
Justin Almeida January 21, 2014 at 02:45 AM
Dude I'm so sick of Chris babeling shut ur mouth! Ur so ignorant it's not even funny! U act like u were there . Why would u stand In front or behind a car that was just turned on . Hmm common sense kicks in ding! I'm gonna get out of the way ! Good idea . I highly doubt the cop who was behind him was standing in the middle of his car and my friends to get smashed. Common sense will bring the truth out . Wait till his Gf talks , wait till the surveillance tapes are shown. Wait until the investigation is done because its far from over . Justice will prevail . FYI . My foot was ran over before nothing major but was run over .., did I have the right to shoot and kill X4
ChrisG January 21, 2014 at 08:25 AM
Let me break this down for you brain trusts. According to the article, the police received a call about an assault with a deadly weapon. The police were on the look out for the reported description of a vehicle. A cop sees a vehicle that matches that description and back up is called. When approach the suspect does not follow instructions. Mind you the police are looking for an armed assailant. Someone who had been reported for armed assault. Instead of calmly and peaceably talking to the police. He starts the car. When asked to turn the car off he instead drives towards the police in an effort to flee. This is according to the article. The suspect was then shot at and killed on the scene. Now, some of you people blame the police for his death. I blame the suspect. There is an investigation and this will be sorted out but there is one undeniable fact that. He is dead because he started the car. He did not turn it off. He put the car in reverse. He tried running through police to get away. Do you see the operative word here? He had control over his fate. Our police have a tremendously difficult job to do. It is tragic but I do not see how the police can be blamed. Another point, his friend was released. Obviously he would have been released as well as soon as he cleared himself. Maybe he was wanted for something else? Why would anyone do this? Act that way? Justin, if you are tired of listening to me opine I suggest you stop reading the patch.
Mimi January 21, 2014 at 01:50 PM
Friends, there is still much to understand, but keep watching this one because there is much to learn. YES our officers have a tough time and I respect that however it's our job to question. When they spoon feed the media it undermines the fabric of a democratic society. I have a girlfriend whose family on a Sunday morning was stopped by Temecula Police. Her husband was in custody for 4 days, a case of mistaken identity! This was just a couple months ago. Everyone makes mistakes, everyone should be accountable - including people in authority THAT HAVE GUNS.
G.G. January 21, 2014 at 08:14 PM
Justin, your comments would be taken more seriously if you'd type them out using actual words instead of "u", "ur", etc. People on here have made excellent points regarding your friends. Anyone who is innocent would have simply stepped out of the car and cooperated. Who on earth with any common sense would start their car, put it in reverse and try to run the cops over? I agree that it would be frightening to have this happen, but why did the driver do this?
Justin Almeida January 23, 2014 at 01:31 AM
Wait until the facts come out U frggin idiots . You guys don't know the people or full story so stick ur thumbs in ur ass and bblow yourselves Chris ur a douchey cop 100% or have family that is and that probably had an uncle that molested u because how does a fuckin nobody like yourself come to somewhere where people are grieving the life of someone close to them , and talk shit . I wish I personally knew u cuz I would lump ur bitch ass up . If I don't know him or his Gf or family personally . Have the respect that u would want shown to you . Quit guessing what happened u bag of dicks and realize u know nothing about our friends and their families . So therefore u can't say he tried to kill cops or do whatever he did . Your being ignorant immature and frankly I'm tired of your 11teen year old fairy girl bullshit . Eat a dick choke on it and kill yourself because anyone with a disregard for life like you have shown on this site is fucking disgusting and you don't deserve to be among people who do care and respect life . Someone answer me the final question .. If Chris g was the fastest sperm then his dad and mom must of been trying to have a fucking miscarriage and the mom must of been doing belly flops to get rid of this social reject . Your the piece of smelly sweaty swampy skin between my balls and my ass more commonly known as the gooch. Not good enough to be in the sack and you smell like shit .
Justin Almeida January 23, 2014 at 01:34 AM
Chrisg and Julie m are the same person lol grow up pal get off ur computer stop playing world of Warcraft and go outside and close your eyes and see if you make it across the street . I should be satisfied with the results u twisted piece of dick cheese
ChrisG January 23, 2014 at 07:50 AM
@justin, don't be so washy-washy. Tell me how you really feel. I'm happy to wait for more facts before we continue this but for now the fact of the matter is your friend died because of his actions. The cops didn't wake up that morning hoping to kill an innocent citizen. I was defending the cops from imbecilic comments. You don't like that? Too bad. Wise up, the life you safe may be your own.
Jennifer Rayn January 28, 2014 at 07:08 PM
This is so wrong we have to get this county investigated by the DOJ or FBI. There is to many police shooting in Riverside County. Remember there is 2 sides to every story. Dead men tell no tails!!!
ChrisG January 29, 2014 at 08:08 AM
@jenn, I agree there are two sides to every story. I agree something is not right with this story. But, if the police were out to murder this man they would have also shot and killed his girlfriend. The person they let go. This is being investigated.
