Anza resident Jose Rosas, 20, was at work Friday and saw the smoke coming from his neighborhood. He said he hurried home to see what he could do.

Rosas' house was spared, but he said it could have been different.

“It could have been me. It started a couple hundred feet from my home. It did scare me,” he said, noting that he is grateful to fire crews for saving his residence.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. --Daniel Lane contributed to this report.
