Canyon Lake Teen Critically Injured in Bicycle Crash

Sheriff's officials say the boy suffered major head trauma.

An unidentified Canyon Lake teenager was hospitalized this week with critical injuries after he crashed into an SUV, sheriff's officials report.

The crash happened around 4:30 p.m. Tuesday in the 22800 block of Vacation Dr., which is near the Canyon Lake Fire Station, sheriff's Sgt. J.P. Strong reported Wednesday.

"The initial investigation revealed the juvenile was riding his bike without a helmet downhill from an adjacent roadway," Strong said in a press statement.

When the 15-year-old crossed onto Vacation, he slammed into a Cadillac Escalade SUV, broadsiding it with extreme force, according to the sergeant.

"The force of the impact was so great that the side air bags of the Escalade deployed," Strong said.

The teen was taken to the hospital in critical condition, with major head trauma, according to Strong.  As of the last available update on Wednesday, he remained hospitalized.

The driver, a 59-year-old woman from Canyon Lake, was cooperative with police, he said.
