Suspect in Home Burglary Arrested After Neighbor Calls Police

A Lakeland Village resident watching a vacationing neighbor’s home alerted authorities about a possible break-in Saturday night.

A Lake Elsinore man suspected of burglarizing a Lakeland Village home Saturday night was arrested as he left the home through the front door by deputies that had been notified by an alert neighbor, according to the Sheriff’s Department.

The residents of the home in the 18000 block of Brightman Avenue were on vacation and the neighbor was watching the home while they were away, according to Sgt. David Cardoza. The neighbor saw an unknown man enter the home around 7:24 p.m. and notified the Sheriff’s Department.

Responding deputies established a perimeter around the home and saw a man inside they recognized from prior contacts as 31-year-old George Smedley, a transient from Lake Elsinore, according to Cardoza. Deputies confirmed that a burglary had taken place and arrested Smedley outside the front door.

Deputies also found methamphetamine and heroin as they arrested Smedley, Cardoza said. He was booked into the Southwest Detention Center for first-degree residential burglary, possession of a controlled substance, and violating probation, all felonies. Bail was set at $35,000.

Hey Tammy. First of all, i wish to commend you for calling the cops to handle the issue with drug addicts trespassing on your property.
I'm a bit confused why you think that "people like me" are the problem in this world. I have no issue with your protecting your family. I have no issue with your possessing firearms to protect your family. Don't you think your last comment is kind of silly? "if you are afraid of my protection then stay away from my property and no problems." I have NO IDEA where you live. And I'm not a druggie, nor a transient, nor a burglar, so I will never trespass on your property... or anyone else's, for that matter.
tammy February 10, 2013 at 05:31 pm
you know collins you seem to be a miserable person i see your comments quite often and it seems like you dont like the majority of people you share the world with it is really sad that you do not enjoy your life but you harrassing people because they own guns is dangerous you are part of obamas agenda to disarm the public I think you are the one with silly comments like " i know you wanted to shoot that guy" you are trying to make gun owners look ignorant but it is you who are a ignorant silly little person who cant think past the propaganda the press feeds you just hope someone with a gun is there when your savior betrays you

Hi Tammy. Actually, I'm a pretty happy person... with a sharp sense of humor.
And here's some more insight about me: 1. I've been a registered Republican for over 30 years. (Joined the GOP so I could vote for Reagan back in the 1980 elections, and voted the Republican ticket ever since... until McCain chose Sarah Palin as his running mate. SARAH PALIN for God sakes! What the hell was McCain thinking?!!) 2. I'm a gun owner. And a beer drinker... and a cigar smoker... and a meat eater.... and not some "tree huggin' libertard" as you seem to be implying. 3. I don't need to try and make gun owners look ignorant. Unfortunately, Wayne LaPierre, Alex Jones, and Ted Nugent have that job all wrapped up. (If our 2nd Amendment rights to gun ownership are ever taken away, it'll be because of these clowns and their "I need to defend myself from the tyrannical government" lunacy. BTW: All three of those idiots SHOULD have their guns taken away. Let's face it: They're crazy.) Again, I commend you for calling the police to handle the druggies trespassing on your property. That was the appropriate first step. And I wouldn't complain if you had to use your firearm to defend yourself against these guys if they broke into your home intending to do you harm before police could arrive. But let's face it. This story really IS the quintessential example of why a lot of folks buy guns... to protect themselves from drug addicts breaking into their homes. right?

Thats because I typed without glasses. I deleted it, and I would re-write it but I lost interest! LOL
Dog February 10, 2013 at 06:28 pm
Collins...Ive read your past posts and you are no Repubican, you are a flaming liberal, and for you to imply that legal gun owners are just hoping and praying for the chance to commit murder in their own home shows just what a twisted person you are.
The Teller of Truth February 10, 2013 at 06:39 pm
TAMMY, eloquently stated!
LBV Collins February 10, 2013 at 06:53 pm
I sympathize, Arthur. I have the same "where-the-hell-did-I-leave-my-glasses" challenge. (And I deleted my comment, too.)
LBV Collins February 10, 2013 at 06:59 pm
Hi Dog. Yes, I've been accused of being a "flaming liberal" by you and others before. No matter. I have spoken the truth, whether you wish to believe it or not.
And to give you some insight as to where I'm coming from with my original comment on this post, you may wish to read this Patch article and the first dozen or so comments: "UPDATE: Man Shot in Alleged Lakeland Village Home Invasion Identified." (I tried to provide a link to the article, but Patch instantly rejected it. Now why in the world would Patch reject a link back to its own article? And this has happened to me before. Makes no sense.)

DB February 11, 2013 at 12:06 pm
I live in this neighborhood, another fine example of a recent parole let loose in the area to make our neighborhood worse....close down the half way houses!
An even better example of how big dogs and security cameras make a great 1st line of defense, make the bad guys go to the house without them...... Now, @ LBV Collins.....the last thing most gun owners ever want to do is have to use it! I shudder at the thought of having to defend my home with a gun, what a terrifying night that would be, but not as half as terrifying as the night your WISH you had a gun! Good job neighbors!
LBV Collins February 11, 2013 at 02:18 pm
Hi DB. Here are my responses to your points:
"...the last thing most gun owners ever want to do is have to use it!" I agree. "I shudder at the thought of having to defend my home with a gun, what a terrifying night that would be, but not as half as terrifying as the night you WISH you had a gun!" Me too. I believe that the vast majority of gun owners (like you and me) are rational... are reasonable... are sane. And we are NOT eager to shoot an intruder. The point of my original comment on this post is that I have read comments by others who seem to relish the idea of using their firearms to kill an intruder. (Oops...) I mean, who relish the idea of using their firearms to protect themselves from an intruder. In a previous comment, I referenced a story in the Patch that included comments supporting my belief that there are people eager to use their weapon to defend themselves. Here's a another Patch story: "Burglars Using Breaker Boxes to See if Anyone’s Home." Just read the comments.

Yes, I saw the home intruder story last fall maybe...I do concur....there are some nuts out there.....usually the ones that have never had to shoot someone....
I recently saw that whole "breaker box" gig....guess that is why most of small loops for little locks on them....crazy stuff

Good grief, Melissa. Do drugs much, or did you just forget to use spellchecker?
LBV Collins February 11, 2013 at 09:28 pm
Profound insight, Brandie. (And you did it using only seven words! Your parents must be so proud.)
Sjeff February 11, 2013 at 10:26 pm
Time to get an education! Or at least use spell check, its pretty easy. Lets get things straight...its slums like these who are fathers that can't be real men and get a real job to show these kids the right way! Instead we have some loser that finds out these people are gone, robs them to get his drug money...boy what a father that is! As for being a RAT, who the f wouldn't call the police when they see some red nosed tweeker breaking in their neighbors home? If you wouldn't do that then you're sick and am glad you are not my neighbor. Its about time he goes back to jail, hes done enough bs in this area. he needs to sit there for a long time and think about his slum life, clean himself up and be a real man and father. Another loser/tweeker heroin addict off the streets! Way to go neighbor!

yep thats gary alright.. he is my girlfriends ex. he has been robbing houses and cars in that neighborhood for years including my girlfriends house numerous times. i caught him red handed in her house one time stealing her jewlery while she was at work but he ran away before cops could get there. i dont understand how they arrest him over and over for the same thing and let him out within a couple of days to continue doing it. he recently called my girlfriend at 4:30 in the morning to harass us from a phone he stoled from some lady.. something needs to be done about this looser... i also am a gun owner and would love for him to break into my house. just saying...

LBV Collins February 13, 2013 at 12:06 pm
Assuming you're talking to me, CC, I did not back peddle. I'm just trying to help Tammy understand the point I was making... that some gun owners express desire at the idea of shooting an intruder.
And you've been on the Patch long enough, and have read enough comments, to know what I said is true.
LBV Collins February 13, 2013 at 12:08 pm
Again, CC, assuming you're talking to me, I don't know what you're referring to. Best as I can tell, both my comments and Mellisa's are still posted.

Melissa, you need to clean up your comments, and it's not the typos that offend me. It is your choice of words. Lose the profanity and the nasty four letter words. If you aren't smart enough to express your opinions without using this language, maybe you should stop commenting. It is offensive.

As citizens wanting a peaceful and sfe community, we should help in solving these numerous burglary issues coming up to be able to achieve our goal of wanting such. We may report them to the police so as to help resolve these issues one by one. So I thought of searching something that can help me to to somehow lessen this problem. Good thing, I found this mobile-based application which perfect for this kind of emergency. It has a direct routing to the nearest 911. Check this out: http://safetrec.com

Somewhere deep in the General Plan Guidelines are references to how often both the plans and theRead More various studies that support the General Plan EIR should be updated. If you think about the rapid growth Riverside County has experienced over the last couple of decades, it is just plain good common sense to require these updates if the document is to remain serviceable. 2003 versions are now 10 years old, and many of the supporting studies in the EIR are even older. It's bad enough when a city or county is forced to work with an old plan, but it is far worse not to have adopted any plan at all. It's much like getting into the car without any sense of direction - let alone a map or GPS.

It would be hard to prove a negative. Are you insinuating that the money for additional policeRead More protection was wasted? Seems like simple logic to me that increased police presence over time would result in less crime, which would in-turn lead to more tourism, which would bring in more money for the City. Laguna Niguel is ranked every year as one of the safest cities in the U.S. Since there's so little crime there, why do they waste their money on any police at all???
LAKE ELSINORE RESIDENT June 17, 2013 at 12:45 pm
I want to see more cops on the street and I want to know if there was less crime.. I think weRead More need more police and I believe the PSAC is a waste of money, money which could go towards more police (no matter how small).

Maybe when the week is over they can give you an answer... "There will be more deputies onRead More patrol in Lake Elsinore during the week of June 17-23, a sheriff’s sergeant is reporting. The beefed up patrols come as Lake Elsinore readies for increased summertime traffic. “As part of the city of Lake Elsinore's commitment to public safety the Lake Elsinore Police Department will be deploying additional units to enforce distracted driving, seatbelt violators, drinking and driving, as well as other traffic laws, the week of June 17-23,” according to a news release from Sgt. Peter Giannakakos, who serves out of the Lake Elsinore Sheriff’s Station."

Martha L. Bridges June 15, 2013 at 07:20 pm
Rose, we've had five years of having celebrations large and small with all the trappings ofRead More city-hood that Bridgette Moore could conjure up - right down to spending money the city didn't have to purchase monogrammed M&M. I suggest it's time to ring the bell and then get back to the real work of running the city. That would include doing the essential foundational work that has been skipped over in favor of window dressing and nonsense for the first five years.

To be clear, Supervisor Jeffries is not yet in support of charging for parking at the hospital, butRead More supported Supervisor Stone's request to have it evaluated, and is willing to consider it based on the results. In his quotes that day he mentioned that when Kaiser started charging for their new structure, they almost immediately changed their mind because the response was so negative. Supervisor Jeffries' main interest in supporting a study of all the county's parking facilities was to determine whether we could save money on the parking structures we already charge for by going to an automated system, rather than staffing it full time with multiple county employees. We have been told that we are actually losing money on the fees we collect for parking, and if that is true, we want to either switch to a cheaper collection system or eliminate the fees entirely.
Chris Twining June 13, 2013 at 12:55 am
Let's hope not. Charging for parking, especially at a hospital, is disgusting to say the least. IRead More got an idea. Let's see if just one elected official can so SOMETHING!!! other than sitting around trying to figure out more and more ways to separate us from our money. Do you have a clue as to what's going on around you? Do you get out of bed in the morning? turn on the TV? go outside? You are 10 years too late. That kind of thing from elected politicians is over. Stop trying to raise money. There are so many things out there you could be doing to make a good name for yourself, and 99% of those things involve cutting spending. Get to the bottom of some things. Imagine how people would react to that. They would swarm at your feet and hold you in high regard. And if you ever find yourself in the hospital, I will gladly come visit you as long as I dont have to pay to park.
