A 10-year-veteran of the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, Long was off-duty and had allegedly been drinking at Spelly’s Pub & Grille in Murrieta on Dec. 21 when Vanettes was shot to death.

At about 8 p.m. the night of the killing, Murrieta police responded to a call at the pub regarding a man with a gun, which allegedly turned out to be Long. Officers determined he shot Vanettes several times.

If convicted as charged, Long could face a sentence of 50 years to life in state prison.
