Winners of last year's Division 5 CIF Championship, the Lancers visited the Temecula Valley Bears and came away with a 2-0 win.

The Lakeside High School boys soccer team marked its final pre-league match against Temecula Valley with a 2-0 win Thursday, and expectations are high the Lancers will go all the way -- just like last year.

Even after moving up one division in CIF, Lakeside is 11-4-1 on the season and begins Sunbelt League action Jan. 8. Temecula Valley is 4-6-3 and next plays its first Southwestern League match at Vista Murrieta Jan. 9.

Thursday's action on the Bear's field could be telling. Both Lakeside goals came in the first half. Junior Oscar Barragan connected with the first score midway through the period. Minutes later, senior Mateo Baltazar came through with the second and final goal of the game.

Junior keeper Jose Chavez played in the first half and had one save. Junior keeper Tristain Cisneros protected the net in the second half and had two saves.

Temecula Valley's keeper, senior Andrew Morse, kept 14 shots from his net. The two that got through made the difference in the match.

The Lancer's Ricky Ruiz, a junior, was named player of the game by his coach Colin Gilliland. Ruiz had one assist and five shots on goal.

Other Lancers contributing offensively in the win included senior Cameron McDiarmid (two shots), junior Ramon Zavala (one shot) and Oscar Gonzalez (one assist and three shots on goal).

Although the Lancers were crowned Division 5 CIF the team lost four all-CIF players to graduation.
